That Five Questions Thing...
Jul. 12th, 2007 10:43 pm1. Leave me a comment saying anything random, like your favorite lyric to your current favorite song. Or your favorite kind of sandwich. Something random. Whatever you like.
2. I respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
3. You WILL update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.

1. I admire the patience and forbearance of anyone who chooses to work with young children. What made you so brave? ;-)
Brave...foolish... There’s a very fine line between the two! There’s such a lot of crap that goes with teaching – planning, testing, league tables, dysfunctional parents, the government trying to make schools fill every gap in society, the lack of recognition of professional status because everyone went to school so everyone thinks they know what teaching is about, the way you always feel you could and should be doing more.../ends autorant – but the actual working-with-the-children part of the job is usually the best bit by far. I teach children who are 5, 6 and 7 years old – a fantastic time where children have a bit of independence and a lot of enthusiasm and interest. On a good day, sharing a part of their lives and being a part of their learning feels like a real privilege.
2. Why Snoopy?
My Dad had a few of the Snoopy paperback books when I was little (I think I’ve inherited his cartoon gene – he always used to pinch the Asterix books I borrowed from the library and read them before I did!). I used to love reading them and then started collecting them myself. I can’t quite put my finger on what I like so much about them – I think they’re simple but effective, kind of innocent and cute without being cutesy.
3. What do you typically order in the bar?
I’m usually driving so it’s usually orange juice. If I can have something stronger then you can’t go wrong with a gin and tonic.
4. And while you're there having a drink anyway, you can have four people, living or dead, to chat to. Who do you want?
This is difficult! I’d probably want to be able to chat to them individually, otherwise I’d just sit there quietly and let them all talk to each other. I hope that’s allowed in your imaginary bar!
1 My sister, who lives in Australia, because she’s just so far away and I miss her.
2. Sara Paretsky because I love her books and the character of V I Warshawski – and I could find out about Chicago for possible future dS fic!
3. Michael Collins, because everyone wants to talk to Neil Armstrong or Buzz Aldrin!
4. And – particularly if the bar has a piano – Hugh Laurie
5. Which books do you re-read time and again?
I know it’s a cliché but I do have to re-read Pride and Prejudice on pretty much an annual basis. No matter how many times I read them PG Wodehouse’s Jeeves and Wooster novels always make me laugh – the language is like music. ‘Down with skool’ and ‘How to be topp’,the ‘Molesworth’ books about St Custard’s by Willans and Searle are leftover favourites from childhood.

1. Exactly how old is your poor old car?
It was two years old when I bought it – and I’d had it ten and a half years when I took it back to the garage and picked up my new (used) car ten days ago. *sob* I drove it til the door started to fall off, but I’ve bought the same kind of car again from the same guy and I hope it’ll last me for the next ten and a half years!
2. Who is your favorite harry potter character, why?
...and will it change next week when I read the 7th book?! I have a soft spot for Lupin although I’m not sure why....
3. If you could only ever eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
It’s kind of an obvious answer but I’d go for chocolate because I could still have a balanced and varied diet – milk chocolate, white chocolate, dark chocolate, pralines, truffles etc etc...!
4. What do you listen to in the car, the radio or CDs? And name the three most played. (either your top three radio stations or three CDs)
I used to love playing old mix tapes in my old car (and going “Oh, I *love* this one” every single time a new song started as if I hadn’t actually recorded them in the first place!) but so far I’ve used the CD player in my new car to listen to ‘Murmur’ by REM, ’12 stops....(and I can’t remember the rest of the title!)’ by The Feeling and I am currently addicted to the new Crowded House album ‘Time on Earth’. I’m a bit of a flicker when it comes to the radio – I don’t want to hear self important DJs blithering on about nothing, I want to hear *tunes*!
5. What do you do when it's raining outside?
...which it’s been doing for weeks now! I think I probably do what I would usually be doing anyway – when you live in England you can’t let rain hold you back!

And I won't stop
Till I'm on top now

Until I get what's mine
Better check that I'm about to upset

So you better step back
