Prompt 19 - vacation

Sing To Me, Come Home To Me

Ray’d had his suspicions for while now.  They’d had lunch three times already that week at the small cafe in the Stratenger Building.  Yeah, they were working in that area a lot at the moment on the Brookley case, but there were plenty of other places nearby too.  Ray always sat down first so Fraser didn’t have to ask to have a seat with a view of the big pine tree – although each time Fraser gave him a look that said he knew what Ray was up to and appreciated it.

It wasn’t like Ray wanted to sit and look at the tree anyway.

It made him feel kind of small.

***

Ray decided what to do as he poured his first coffee of the morning.  Fraser was spreading marmalade on his toast and singing to himself, as he always did whenever he was in the kitchen.  Ray had gotten used to ‘Northwest Passage’ recently – he could even hum it with the right kind of beat to jokingly waltz Fraser around the small room – but this song was different.  He’d heard it before, though he couldn’t think where.

‘Hear me call across the waves
If I don’t come home tonight
I will make it home someday.’

His first thought was “Who are you singing that to? Me...or Canada?”  The question made his stomach twist up tight.  He stood close behind Fraser and wrapped his arms around Fraser’s waist.  “You’d better come home tonight,” he said before kissing the back of Fraser’s neck.  Fraser gave him a puzzled look as he turned his head to press a faintly orangey return kiss to Ray’s lips.  “Of course, Ray.  It’s only a song.”

Ray felt himself blush and hid his face at the back of Fraser’s neck again.  “Good.  ‘Cause we’ve got a vacation to plan.”

My April Fails table only has three entries, but it can be found here.

Awwwww. *hearttug*

Clever use of the "32 Down" lyrics. And wow, it's really powerful to imagine Fraser singing that.

Fraser singing is always a good thing!
Thanks for reading.

Awww! I love Ray's quiet insecurity, and the notion of Fraser singing (even if it's a bittersweet song) always makes me happy. Well donea, Leafy!

*nods* Fraser's musical side appeals to me too!
Thanks!

Aw, this is sweet and lovely, and kind of bittersweet. Love the image of the tree making Ray feel small, for some reason. And Fraser singing 32 Down! And the image of Ray waltzing Fraser across the room! Really lovely work.

Glad you enjoyed it!

'he could even hum it with the right kind of beat to jokingly waltz Fraser around the small room.' What a lovely image.

His first thought was “Who are you singing that to? Me...or Canada?” The question made his stomach twist up tight.

Oh, Robert MacKenzie is one of my favorites. And poor Ray! Canada is such a huge thing to compare yourself to and compete with, even if it's only in your mind.

And it was not April Fails - your three fics were excellent! Really, in the end, it's quality, not quantity that counts...

Canada is such a huge thing to compare yourself to
Yeah, it would make anyone feel pretty small!

You're very kind about my three fics - your help with one of them was invaluable! ♥

Fraser gave him a puzzled look as he turned his head to press a faintly orangey return kiss to Ray’s lips.

I really like that, the sense of taste being worked in. I really enjoy all your Ray/Fraser/kitchen writing (thinking of Tea for One for Two as well). You conjure up a lovely domesticity and intimacy, especially with their moments of insecurity and comfort.

And yes, Fraser singing is always of the good.

Aww, thanks - I've got a soft spot for those two stories. And I'm pretty sure I've got a few more kitchen fics somewhere....
