So this weekend
my friend and I went to Wales to learn to crochet.  I like knitting and can sort of see how it works, but being able to make something from just yarn and a hook has always seemed a bit like witchcraft to me.  We stayed in a fantastic 70s-throwback B&B in the middle of nowhere and were surrounded by beautiful scenery although the best thing about it was the Fisher Price school in the bedroom - just like the one from my childhood!

My first attempt at crochet was fairly disastrous - I got lots of the holes in the wrong place although it still did make kind of a pattern.  I may be irregular but at least I'm consistently irregular.

The next go was slightly better although the corners were still tricky.

The variegated yarns we used were beautiful but it made it quite hard to see where you were going.  Anyway the Fisher Price people were so pleased when I finished this that they came out and had a party round it.

I decided to use two different colours so I could see the rows easier and work out the corners.  This is being worked with a gorgous ribbon-y yarn and is proof that practice improves even if it doesn't quite make perfect.

So now I can crochet! Yay! Just don't ask me to make anything that isn't square.......

Wow, that's brilliant! I'm really impressed. I can't even knit (I gave it up after about a week) so the fact that you can crochet too is incredible. I've always wondered who the first person was who thought, 'hey, I have a big hook and some yarn, let's see if I can make a table mat with it!'

BTW, I've just read your email, and I'll give it a read over the next couple of days, if that's ok?

Ugh, I'm so jealous! I was a crochet machine a couple of years ago (I made three big afghans and some baby clothes) but because I taught myself there were significant limits as to what I was able to accomplish. For example, I never learned how to make squares. *hides* Your square turned out so beautifully, and I could see how that pattern could be used to make a really beautiful afghan. So, jealous. Plus you got to go to Wales to learn handicrafts. How is your life so awesome? :-)

I know! That's definitely a thought I had when I was struggling at the start of the day (a time when if I'd met that first person I'd have given them an alternative suggestion about what they could do with their hook)

PS. That's great - thank you very much!

Totally - my friend couldn't remember the last time she'd seen me so squeeful! When we were little, my sister and I had a Fisher Price school and a Fisher Price hospital - and where have we ended up? Working in a school and a hospital! Now that's just scary! I wonder what would have happened if I'd had the garage I really wanted.....
